What are the advantages and disadvantages of anemophily in plants?

1 Answer

Advantages of Anemophily:

  • Wide Distribution: Wind can carry pollen over long distances, allowing for the wide distribution of genetic material.
  • No Dependency on Pollinators: Plants do not rely on insects, birds, or other animals for pollination, which can be beneficial in environments where these pollinators are scarce.

Disadvantages of Anemophily:

  • Waste of Pollen: A large amount of pollen is produced to ensure successful pollination, but much of it is wasted as it may not reach the target flower.
  • Uncertain Pollination: Wind pollination is less targeted and more random compared to biotic pollination, leading to less efficient fertilization.
