Application of Saytzeff Rule in Predicting Major Products

Asked by Ajit Kewal · 2 years ago

How does the Saytzeff Rule help in predicting the major product in elimination reactions involving alcohols?

1 Answer

In elimination reactions involving alcohols, the Saytzeff Rule still applies. When an alcohol undergoes dehydration (loss of water) to form an alkene, the more substituted alkene is generally the major product. This is because more substituted alkenes are more stable due to hyperconjugation and the inductive effect of alkyl groups.

For instance, when 2-butanol is dehydrated, the major product is 2-butene rather than 1-butene, following the Saytzeff Rule.
