What is the law of equipartition of energy and how is it applied in thermodynamics?

1 Answer

The law of equipartition of energy states that in thermal equilibrium, energy is shared equally among all degrees of freedom of a system. For each degree of freedom, the average energy is (1/2)kT, where k is Boltzmann's constant and T is the absolute temperature. This law is applied in thermodynamics to calculate the specific heat capacity of gases and to understand the distribution of energy in molecular systems.
