Bond Order Calculation

How do you calculate the bond order of O2^2-?

1 Answer

To calculate the bond order of O22-:

1. Draw the molecular orbital diagram for O2
2. Count the number of electrons (16 for O2, +2 for the negative charge)
3. Fill the molecular orbitals with 18 electrons
4. Use the formula: Bond Order = (Bonding electrons - Antibonding electrons) / 2

For O22-:
Bonding electrons = 10
Antibonding electrons = 8
Bond Order = (10 - 8) / 2 = 1

Therefore, the bond order of O22- is 1.
