To calculate the least count of a vernier caliper, you need to know the value of one main scale division (MSD) and one vernier scale division (VSD). The least count is calculated using the formula:
Least Count (LC) = 1 MSD - 1 VSD
For example, if the main scale division (MSD) is 1 mm and the vernier scale has 10 divisions that coincide with 9 main scale divisions, then one vernier scale division (VSD) is:
1 VSD = (9 MSD) / 10 = 0.9 mm
Therefore, the least count (LC) is:
LC = 1 MSD - 1 VSD = 1 mm - 0.9 mm = 0.1 mm
So, the least count of the vernier caliper in this example is 0.1 mm, meaning it can measure up to 0.1 mm accurately.
