Calculation of Equivalent Mass

Asked by Ashika Chavda · 1 year ago

How can you calculate the equivalent mass of an acid or base?

1 Answer

To calculate the equivalent mass of an acid or base:

1. For acids: Equivalent mass = Molar mass ÷ Basicity
2. For bases: Equivalent mass = Molar mass ÷ Acidity
3. Basicity is the number of replaceable H+ ions per molecule
4. Acidity is the number of replaceable OH- ions per molecule

Example: For H2SO4 (Molar mass = 98 g/mol, Basicity = 2)
Equivalent mass = 98 ÷ 2 = 49 g/equivalent
