CFSE Calculation

How is crystal field stabilization energy calculated for octahedral complexes?

1 Answer

To calculate CFSE for octahedral complexes:
1. Determine the number of electrons in t2g and eg orbitals
2. Multiply t2g electrons by (-0.4Δo)
3. Multiply eg electrons by (0.6Δo)
4. Sum up these values
5. Add pairing energy if applicable
CFSE = (-0.4Δo × nt2g) + (0.6Δo × neg) + P
Where Δo is the octahedral crystal field splitting parameter, n is the number of electrons, and P is pairing energy.
