What is crystal field stabilization energy and how does it affect the stability of transition metal complexes?
Crystal Field Stabilization Energy (CFSE) is the energy difference between the split d orbitals in a transition metal complex compared to their energy in a spherical field. It affects the stability of transition metal complexes by determining the energy released when ligands approach the metal ion. Complexes with higher CFSE are more stable. The CFSE depends on the number of electrons in d orbitals and the strength of the ligand field.
