Characteristics of D Block Elements

The d block elements, also known as transition elements, have the following general characteristics as per the NCERT syllabus:

• Variable Oxidation States: These elements exhibit variable oxidation states due to the involvement of their (n-1)d and ns electrons in bonding.
• Formation of Colored Compounds: The compounds of d block elements are usually colored due to d-d transitions.
• Magnetic Properties: Many d block elements and their compounds show paramagnetic behavior due to unpaired electrons.
• High Melting and Boiling Points: These elements have high melting and boiling points because of the strong metallic bonds and the presence of unpaired electrons.
• Catalytic Properties: Many d block elements and their compounds act as catalysts in various chemical reactions.
• Formation of Complex Compounds: They have a high tendency to form complex compounds due to the availability of vacant d orbitals.
• Alloy Formation: D block elements can form alloys with other metals.
