What is the purpose of the void in crystalline structure? Is the void to be occupied by cation or it’s not necessary for a cation to be present there?

What is the purpose of the void in crystalline structure? Is the void to be occupied by cation or it’s not necessary for a cation to be present there?
Its because of circular assumption of atoms, obviously when many atoms will join together in lattice, there will be gap or void, cation since smaller in size can be fitted in void.
