Can someone explain the concept of dual nature of radiation and matter as per the NCERT syllabus?

1 Answer

The dual nature of radiation and matter refers to the fact that both light and matter exhibit properties of both waves and particles. This concept is fundamental in quantum mechanics and is highlighted in the NCERT syllabus.

For Radiation: Light has wave-like properties such as interference and diffraction, which can be explained by its wave nature. At the same time, phenomena like the photoelectric effect can only be explained if light is considered to be made of particles called photons.

For Matter: Particles such as electrons also exhibit wave-like properties. For instance, electrons can produce diffraction patterns, which is a characteristic feature of waves. This wave-like behavior of particles is described by the de Broglie hypothesis, which states that any moving particle or object has an associated wavelength.
