What is entropy and why is it important in thermodynamics? How is it introduced in class 11?
Entropy is a measure of the randomness or disorder of a system. The greater the disorder, the higher the entropy. In thermodynamics, entropy is crucial because it helps predict the direction of spontaneous processes and the feasibility of reactions.
In class 11, entropy is introduced as a concept that increases in spontaneous processes. For instance, when heat flows from a hot object to a cold one, the overall entropy of the system increases. This aligns with the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which states that the total entropy of an isolated system can never decrease over time.
Understanding entropy helps in grasping why certain processes occur naturally and why others require external intervention.
