Coordination Number

The coordination number in coordination compounds refers to the number of ligands directly bonded to the central metal atom or ion. It is determined by counting the number of donor atoms from ligands that are directly attached to the central metal. For example, in [Co(NH₃)₆]Cl₃, the coordination number is 6 because six NH₃ molecules are directly bonded to the cobalt ion.
