What is an apoenzyme?

An apoenzyme is:

1. The protein part of an enzyme without its cofactor or prosthetic group
2. Inactive on its own and requires a cofactor to function

When combined with its specific cofactor, it forms a complete and active enzyme called a holoenzyme.
