What is the definition of equivalent mass in chemistry?

Equivalent mass is defined as the mass of an element or compound that combines with or replaces 1.008 g of hydrogen or 8 g of oxygen or 35.5 g of chlorine. It represents the mass of a substance that takes part in a chemical reaction and is equivalent to one mole of hydrogen ions in that reaction.
