Difference between Respiration and Photosynthesis in Plants

Asked by Mohammed Ismailullah · 2 years ago

I am confused between respiration and photosynthesis in plants. Can anyone explain the main differences between these two processes?

1 Answer

Respiration vs. Photosynthesis:

  • Process: Respiration is the process of breaking down glucose to produce energy, while photosynthesis is the process of using light energy to produce glucose and oxygen.
  • Occurrence: Respiration occurs all the time (day and night), whereas photosynthesis occurs only in the presence of light.
  • Gas Exchange: During respiration, oxygen is consumed and carbon dioxide is released. In photosynthesis, carbon dioxide is consumed and oxygen is released.
  • Location: Respiration occurs in the mitochondria of the cells, while photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts.
