Diplontic vs. Other Life Cycles

Asked by Jai Gupta · 1 year ago

How does a diplontic life cycle differ from haplontic and haplo-diplontic life cycles?

1 Answer

Differences between life cycles:

1. Diplontic:
- Dominant diploid stage
- Only gametes are haploid
- Example: Most animals

2. Haplontic:
- Dominant haploid stage
- Only zygote is diploid
- Example: Some algae, fungi

3. Haplo-diplontic:
- Both haploid and diploid stages are multicellular
- Alternation of generations
- Example: Plants, some algae

The main difference lies in the dominance of different ploidy stages and the timing of meiosis in the life cycle.
