Distinction between alcohols and phenols

How can we distinguish between alcohols and phenols using chemical tests?

1 Answer

Alcohols and phenols can be distinguished using the following tests:

  • Ferric chloride test: Phenols give a violet color with FeCl3, while alcohols do not.
  • Sodium bicarbonate test: Phenols react with NaHCO3 to produce effervescence, but alcohols do not.
  • Lucas test: Primary alcohols react slowly, secondary alcohols react faster, and tertiary alcohols react immediately with Lucas reagent. Phenols do not react.
