Exchange of Gases in Alveoli

Asked by Neha Patel · 2 years ago

How does the exchange of gases occur in the alveoli of the lungs?

1 Answer

Exchange of Gases in Alveoli:
1. The alveoli are tiny air sacs in the lungs where the exchange of gases takes place.
2. Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses through the walls of the alveoli and enters the surrounding capillaries.
3. Simultaneously, carbon dioxide from the blood diffuses into the alveoli to be exhaled.
4. This process is driven by the differences in partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the alveolar air and the blood.
5. Oxygen binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells for transport to body tissues, while carbon dioxide is carried back to the lungs for exhalation.
