Factors Affecting Electronegativity

Asked by Meghana Chawla · 2 years ago

How does atomic size affect the electronegativity of elements in the same period?

1 Answer

In the same period of the periodic table, electronegativity generally increases from left to right. This is because:

1. Atomic size decreases across a period.
2. The effective nuclear charge increases.
3. The valence electrons are closer to the nucleus.

As a result, elements on the right side of a period have a stronger attraction for electrons, leading to higher electronegativity values.
