Factors Affecting Ionization Enthalpy

Asked by Anushka Kapoor · 2 years ago

What are the factors that affect ionization enthalpy?

1 Answer

Several factors affect the ionization enthalpy of an element:

  1. Atomic Size: Larger atoms have lower ionization enthalpy because the outer electrons are farther from the nucleus and experience less electrostatic force of attraction.
  2. Nuclear Charge: Higher nuclear charge increases ionization enthalpy as the electrons are held more tightly by the nucleus.
  3. Shielding Effect: Inner shell electrons shield the outer electrons from the full effect of the nuclear charge, reducing ionization enthalpy.
  4. Electron Configuration: Atoms with stable electron configurations (such as noble gases) have higher ionization enthalpies because removing an electron would disrupt their stable arrangement.

Understanding these factors helps predict the reactivity and chemical behavior of different elements.
