Factors Affecting Reaction Rate

What are the factors that affect the rate of a chemical reaction?

1 Answer

According to the NCERT syllabus, several factors affect the rate of a chemical reaction:

  1. Concentration of Reactants: Generally, an increase in the concentration of reactants leads to an increase in the rate of reaction.
  2. Temperature: An increase in temperature usually increases the reaction rate. This is because higher temperatures provide more kinetic energy to the reacting molecules, leading to more frequent and effective collisions.
  3. Catalysts: Catalysts are substances that increase the rate of a reaction without being consumed in the process. They work by providing an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy.
  4. Surface Area: For reactions involving solids, an increase in surface area (e.g., by grinding a solid into a powder) can increase the reaction rate.
  5. Nature of Reactants: The physical state and chemical nature of the reactants can also affect the reaction rate. For example, ionic compounds generally react faster than covalent compounds.
