Factors affecting SN1 and SN2 reactions

Asked by Anika Kapoor · 2 years ago

What are the factors that affect the rate of SN1 and SN2 reactions?

1 Answer

Factors affecting SN1 reactions:
1. Substrate structure: More stable carbocations (tertiary > secondary > primary) favor SN1.
2. Solvent: Polar protic solvents stabilize the carbocation and favor SN1.
3. Leaving group: Better leaving groups (like I-, Br-) favor SN1.

Factors affecting SN2 reactions:
1. Substrate structure: Less steric hindrance (methyl > primary > secondary > tertiary) favors SN2.
2. Solvent: Polar aprotic solvents favor SN2 by not stabilizing the nucleophile.
3. Nucleophile: Stronger nucleophiles favor SN2.
4. Leaving group: Good leaving groups (like I-, Br-) favor SN2.
