Function of Sieve Tubes

The primary function of sieve tubes is to transport organic compounds, primarily sucrose, throughout the plant. This transport occurs in the phloem tissue and is called translocation. Sieve tubes provide an efficient pathway for the movement of sugars from source tissues (like leaves) to sink tissues (like roots or fruits).
