Functional Group Priority

Asked by Neha Sharma · 1 year ago

How do you determine which functional group takes priority when naming organic compounds with multiple functional groups?

1 Answer

To determine functional group priority in IUPAC nomenclature:

1. Use the principle functional group suffix
2. Follow the priority order: acids > esters > amides > nitriles > aldehydes > ketones > alcohols > amines > ethers
3. The highest priority group becomes the suffix
4. Lower priority groups are named as prefixes
5. In case of multiple same-priority groups, use lowest possible numbering
