Functional Groups

Asked by Meghana Chawla · 1 year ago

How do the functional groups of alcohols, phenols, and ethers differ in structure?

1 Answer

The functional groups differ as follows:

1. Alcohols: R-OH (R is an alkyl group)
- Contains a hydroxyl group (-OH) bonded to a saturated carbon atom

2. Phenols: Ar-OH (Ar is an aromatic ring)
- Has a hydroxyl group (-OH) directly bonded to an aromatic ring

3. Ethers: R-O-R' (R and R' are alkyl or aryl groups)
- Contains an oxygen atom bonded to two carbon atoms

These structural differences account for their varying chemical properties and reactivity.
