How does gas exchange occur in the alveoli?

- Oxygen diffuses from the air in the alveoli into the blood capillaries
- Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood capillaries into the alveoli
- This process is driven by concentration gradients
- The large surface area and thin walls of alveoli facilitate efficient gas exchange
