What are the general characteristics of p-block elements as per the NCERT syllabus?

1 Answer

The p-block elements are found in groups 13-18 of the periodic table. Here are some general characteristics:

  • Electronic Configuration: The general electronic configuration of p-block elements is ns2 np1-6.
  • Oxidation States: These elements exhibit variable oxidation states. For instance, nitrogen shows oxidation states from -3 to +5.
  • Reactivity: Reactivity varies significantly; for example, halogens (group 17) are highly reactive, whereas noble gases (group 18) are mostly inert.
  • Nature: P-block contains metals, non-metals, and metalloids. Carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur are non-metals; boron, silicon, germanium, arsenic, antimony, and tellurium are metalloids; and the rest are metals.
  • Covalent Bonding: These elements primarily form covalent bonds.
