Gibbs Free Energy

Asked by Vikram Aditya · 1 year ago

What is Gibbs free energy and how is it used to determine the spontaneity of a chemical reaction?

1 Answer

Gibbs free energy (G) is a thermodynamic potential that combines enthalpy (H) and entropy (S):

G = H - TS

Where T is temperature in Kelvin.

To determine spontaneity:
- If ΔG < 0, the reaction is spontaneous
- If ΔG = 0, the reaction is at equilibrium
- If ΔG > 0, the reaction is non-spontaneous

The equation ΔG = ΔH - TΔS is used to calculate the change in Gibbs free energy for a reaction, helping predict its spontaneity under given conditions.
