Homologous Organs vs Analogous Organs

Asked by Mohammed Irfanullah · 2 years ago

How do homologous organs differ from analogous organs?

1 Answer

Homologous organs differ from analogous organs in their origin and structure. Homologous organs have a similar embryonic origin and structure but may perform different functions, indicating a common ancestry. In contrast, analogous organs perform similar functions but have different embryonic origins and structures, indicating they evolved independently. For example, the wings of birds (homologous to the forelimbs of other vertebrates) and the wings of insects (analogous to the wings of birds) perform the same function of flying but have different structural and embryonic origins.
