Hybridization in NH3

Asked by Akshara Venkatesan · 1 year ago

What is the hybridization of nitrogen in NH3 and how does it relate to its structure?

1 Answer

The nitrogen atom in NH3 undergoes sp³ hybridization. This hybridization results in a tetrahedral electron pair geometry, with three of the sp³ hybrid orbitals forming bonds with hydrogen atoms and the fourth sp³ orbital containing a lone pair of electrons. This arrangement leads to the pyramidal shape of the NH3 molecule with a bond angle of approximately 107°.
