Identifying Substitution Reactions

Asked by Ramesh Doctor · 1 year ago

How can you identify a substitution reaction among given chemical equations?

1 Answer

To identify a substitution reaction:
1. Look for the replacement of one atom or group with another
2. The number of atoms of each element should remain the same on both sides of the equation (except for the substituted groups)
3. The carbon skeleton of the organic compound should remain intact
4. Common leaving groups include halogens, OH, OR, etc.
5. Common substituting groups include NH3, CN-, OH-, etc.
Example: CH3-Br + NaOH → CH3-OH + NaBr (substitution of Br with OH)
