What is the industrial method for preparing potassium dichromate from chromite ore?

1 Answer

Industrial preparation of potassium dichromate from chromite ore:
1. Roast chromite ore (FeCr2O4) with Na2CO3 and lime in air
2. Leach the product with water to obtain sodium chromate (Na2CrO4) solution
3. Acidify the solution with H2SO4 to get sodium dichromate (Na2Cr2O7)
4. React sodium dichromate with KCl to form potassium dichromate
5. Crystallize and purify potassium dichromate
The overall reaction can be represented as:
4 FeCr2O4 + 8 Na2CO3 + 7 O2 → 8 Na2CrO4 + 2 Fe2O3 + 8 CO2
