Inverted Pyramid of Biomass

Asked by Niharika L · 2 years ago

Can the pyramid of biomass ever be inverted? If so, in what kind of ecosystem does this occur?

1 Answer

Yes, the pyramid of biomass can be inverted in certain ecosystems, such as aquatic ecosystems. In such ecosystems, the biomass of producers (like phytoplankton) is less than the biomass of the primary consumers (like zooplankton). This inversion occurs because the producers have a very high turnover rate; they reproduce and are consumed rapidly, so at any given moment, their biomass is lower compared to the biomass of the consumers that feed on them.
