IUPAC Nomenclature

Asked by Mohammad Rizwan · 1 year ago

How are coordination compounds named according to IUPAC rules?

1 Answer

IUPAC nomenclature for coordination compounds follows these basic steps:
1. Name the cation before the anion
2. In the complex ion, name the ligands first, followed by the metal atom/ion
3. Use prefixes (di-, tri-, tetra-, etc.) to indicate the number of each type of ligand
4. Name the ligands alphabetically
5. Indicate the oxidation state of the metal in Roman numerals
For example: [Co(NH3)6]Cl3 is named hexaamminecobalt(III) chloride.
