How do you name hydrocarbons using IUPAC nomenclature?

1 Answer

To name hydrocarbons using IUPAC nomenclature:
  1. Identify the longest carbon chain
  2. Number the carbons to give substituents the lowest possible numbers
  3. Name substituents as prefixes
  4. Use the appropriate suffix for the hydrocarbon type (-ane for alkanes, -ene for alkenes, -yne for alkynes)
  5. Combine the parts in the order: prefixes + parent chain name + suffix
