Least Count

How do you calculate the least count of a vernier caliper?

1 Answer

The least count of a vernier caliper is calculated using the formula:

Least Count = 1 Main Scale Division - 1 Vernier Scale Division

For a standard vernier caliper:
1 Main Scale Division = 1 mm
1 Vernier Scale Division = 0.9 mm

Therefore, Least Count = 1 mm - 0.9 mm = 0.1 mm or 0.01 cm
