Light-Dependent Reactions

Asked by Aarav S · 1 year ago

What are the main steps in the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis?

1 Answer

The light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis include:

1. Light absorption by chlorophyll in photosystems I and II
2. Excitation of electrons and their transfer through the electron transport chain
3. Photolysis of water, producing oxygen as a byproduct
4. Generation of ATP through chemiosmosis (ATP synthase)
5. Production of NADPH from NADP+

These reactions occur in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts and provide the energy (ATP) and reducing power (NADPH) for the light-independent reactions.
