The main steps of light reactions in photosynthesis are:
  1. Light absorption by chlorophyll and other pigments
  2. Excitation of electrons and their transfer through electron transport chain
  3. Photolysis of water, releasing oxygen
  4. Formation of ATP through chemiosmosis (photophosphorylation)
  5. Reduction of NADP+ to NADPH
These reactions occur in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts and produce ATP and NADPH for use in the Calvin cycle.
