Mechanism of Sandmeyer Reaction

Asked by Jai Gupta · 1 year ago

What is the Sandmeyer reaction and what is its mechanism?

1 Answer

The Sandmeyer reaction is a method to convert aromatic amines into aryl halides, cyanides, or thiocyanates. The mechanism involves:

1. Diazotization: The aromatic amine reacts with nitrous acid to form a diazonium salt.
2. Nucleophilic substitution: The diazonium salt reacts with Cu(I) salt to form an aryl radical.
3. Radical reaction: The aryl radical combines with the halide, cyanide, or thiocyanate to form the final product.

For example: ArNH2 → ArN2+ → Ar• → ArX (where X = Cl, Br, CN, or SCN)
