How does crossing over occur during meiosis?

1 Answer

Crossing over occurs during prophase I of meiosis. In a diagram, you would see:

  • Homologous chromosomes paired up to form tetrads
  • Exchange of genetic material between non-sister chromatids
  • Chiasmata (X-shaped structures) at the points where crossing over occurs

This process increases genetic diversity in the resulting gametes.
