How does facilitated diffusion differ from simple diffusion?

1 Answer

Facilitated diffusion and simple diffusion are both passive transport processes, but they differ in several ways:

  • Simple diffusion occurs without the help of transport proteins, while facilitated diffusion requires carrier proteins or channel proteins.
  • Simple diffusion is slower and less specific, while facilitated diffusion is faster and more selective.
  • Simple diffusion works for small, nonpolar molecules, while facilitated diffusion is necessary for larger or charged molecules that can't easily pass through the cell membrane.
