Order of Acidity

1 Answer

Nitro group is strong electron withdrawing group. Hence, it increases the acidity of benzoic acid by removing electron density from carboxylate ion. This effect is maximum when nitro group is in ortho position (the effect is known as ortho effect). In p-isomer, both inductive and resonance effects of nitro group withdraw the electron density. In m-isomer, only inductive effect is operational.
