PET Scan Principles

Asked by Sim Ran · 1 year ago

What is the basic principle behind PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans?

1 Answer

The basic principle of PET scans is:
  1. A small amount of radioactive tracer is injected into the body
  2. The tracer emits positrons as it decays
  3. Positrons collide with electrons, producing gamma rays
  4. Detectors around the body detect these gamma rays
  5. A computer reconstructs the data into 3D images
This allows visualization of metabolic processes in the body.
