The basic principle of PET scans is:
- A small amount of radioactive tracer is injected into the body
- The tracer emits positrons as it decays
- Positrons collide with electrons, producing gamma rays
- Detectors around the body detect these gamma rays
- A computer reconstructs the data into 3D images
