pH and Enzyme Activity

Asked by Vikram Aditya · 1 year ago

What is the relationship between pH and enzyme activity?

1 Answer

pH has a crucial impact on enzyme activity:
  • Each enzyme has an optimum pH range where it functions most efficiently
  • Extreme pH levels can denature enzymes, causing them to lose their catalytic activity
  • Changes in pH can alter the ionic bonds and hydrogen bonds in the enzyme, affecting its shape and function
For example, pepsin in the stomach works best at a low pH (acidic environment), while trypsin in the small intestine functions optimally at a slightly alkaline pH.
