Phloem Transport

What is the mechanism of translocation in phloem?

1 Answer

Translocation in phloem is the process of transporting food (mainly sucrose) throughout the plant. The mechanism involves:

1. Loading: Sucrose is actively loaded into the phloem at the source (usually leaves).
2. Pressure flow: This creates high osmotic pressure, drawing water into the phloem.
3. Mass flow: The resulting pressure drives the solution through the phloem tubes.
4. Unloading: At the sink (areas of growth or storage), sucrose is unloaded.

This process, unlike xylem transport, can occur in any direction as needed by the plant.
