What are the light-dependent and light-independent reactions in photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis consists of two main stages:

1. Light-dependent reactions:
- Occur in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts
- Require light energy
- Involve the splitting of water molecules (photolysis)
- Produce ATP and NADPH
2. Light-independent reactions (Calvin cycle):
- Take place in the stroma of chloroplasts
- Do not directly require light
- Use ATP and NADPH from light-dependent reactions
- Fix CO2 to produce glucose
- Involve the enzyme RuBisCO
