Photosynthesis

Asked by Nandini Patel · 1 year ago

What are the light-dependent and light-independent reactions in photosynthesis?

1 Answer

Photosynthesis consists of two main stages:

1. Light-dependent reactions:
  • Occur in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts
  • Require light energy
  • Involve the splitting of water molecules (photolysis)
  • Produce ATP and NADPH

2. Light-independent reactions (Calvin cycle):
  • Take place in the stroma of chloroplasts
  • Do not directly require light
  • Use ATP and NADPH from light-dependent reactions
  • Fix CO2 to produce glucose
  • Involve the enzyme RuBisCO
