Photosystems

Asked by Parvati Parvati · 1 year ago

What are photosystems and how do they function in the light reaction?

1 Answer

Photosystems are protein complexes in the thylakoid membrane that capture light energy. There are two types:
  • Photosystem I (PSI): Contains P700 chlorophyll a molecules
  • Photosystem II (PSII): Contains P680 chlorophyll a molecules
They function by:
  • Absorbing light energy
  • Exciting electrons to a higher energy state
  • Passing these excited electrons through an electron transport chain
  • Generating ATP and NADPH for use in the Calvin cycle
