What are photosystems and how do they function in the light reaction?

Photosystems are protein complexes in the thylakoid membrane that capture light energy. There are two types:
- Photosystem I (PSI): Contains P700 chlorophyll a molecules
- Photosystem II (PSII): Contains P680 chlorophyll a molecules
- Absorbing light energy
- Exciting electrons to a higher energy state
- Passing these excited electrons through an electron transport chain
- Generating ATP and NADPH for use in the Calvin cycle
