What is plastic deformation and how does it differ from elastic deformation?
Plastic deformation is the permanent change in shape or size of a solid when subjected to stress beyond its elastic limit. Unlike elastic deformation, plastic deformation is irreversible. When the applied stress exceeds the yield strength of the material, it undergoes plastic deformation. This process involves the breaking and reforming of bonds between atoms. Materials like metals often exhibit both elastic and plastic behavior, with the transition point known as the yield point.
