Preparation of ethers

What is the Williamson synthesis for preparing ethers?

1 Answer

Williamson synthesis is a method to prepare ethers. It involves the following steps:

  1. An alkoxide ion is prepared by reacting an alcohol with sodium metal.
  2. The alkoxide ion then reacts with an alkyl halide to form an ether.

The general reaction is:

R-O- Na+ + R'-X → R-O-R' + NaX

Where R and R' are alkyl groups, and X is a halogen (usually Cl, Br, or I).
